CMS TRAINING COURSES
- Low-Light Instructor Course - This two-evening course addresses low-light issues for law enforcement & governmental agencies that work in this environment and how agency instructors can train for them. Evening #1 starts with human factors and legal considerations. The class moves on to using hand-held and weapon-mounted lights before concluding with judgmental drills and practical application. Evening #2 begins with a practical application exercise before shifting to patrol rifles in the low-light environment. The class will emphasize the importance of target discrimination vs. target illumination. Also, the student will understand how ambient and direct lighting can hinder an officer's ability to see in low-light settings. After completing the course, the student will be able to demonstrate and employ hand-held and weapon-mounted light skills as well as be able to present this material to patrol officers. (Course Time: 27 hours, three evenings)
- Pistol Mounted Optics Instructor - This two-day class was developed at the request of multiple law enforcement agencies familiar with the Pistol Mounted Optics program I created for Gunsite. The course covers safety, human factors, equipment selection, organization concerns (armorer, maintenance, and policy), and what changes come with the dot. Drills focus on demonstrating the path to building skills through development drills, low light employment, optic failures, and engaging single and multiple targets – all through the lens of adult learning. It has been Connecticut POST approved for two different subject matter areas – firearms and judgmental shooting. Currently, this class is only for governmental entities; however, I am deciding what non-government instructor standard to use for those who are training armed citizens. (Course Time: 16 hours)
- Re-Active Shotgun - This 8-hour class is based on fundamental shotgun skills and employing it within the confines of home and business defense encounters. After addressing nomenclature and modifications, the course covers ammunition performance selection, manipulating your ammunition and the shotgun's controls, engaging both single and multiple threats, and movement to and using cover within a structure within the realistic distances for home and business owners. It pairs nicely with Low Light Application for a second day. (Course Time: 8 hours)
- Pro-Active Shotgun - After reviewing nomenclature and relevant modifications, the law enforcement-centric class focuses on using the shotgun within the practical and Constitutional confines. The curriculum covers manipulating the controls, loading & unloading, single and multiple threat engagements, use of cover, close-range engagements, switching to a single projectile, working around vehicles, and understanding and accepting the platform's limitations. The Low Light Application class can be tailored to law enforcement needs and would be a solid combination, (Course Time: 8 hours)
- Low Light Application (Pistol, Shotgun, or Carbine) - These classes grew out of instructional blocks from a regional Low Light Gunfighting series I have been teaching over the last few years. Starting with safety, human factors, and dry manipulations, the material progresses to live-fire with the weapon of choice utilizing both hand-held and weapon-mounted lights. Non-live fire application is included within the confines of the facility. A judgmental shooting exercise concludes the class. Hosts can pair these with the Concealed Carry Skills classes as well as Re-Active or Pro-Active shotgun. (Each platform is an 8-hour block)
- Concealed Carry Skills - Born out of off-duty carry training for correctional deputies and regional concealed carry-centric skills classes. This is not a Concealed Carry / License to Carry permit class; instead, it focuses on skills such as re-acting to developing threats. This class is a mixture of handgun presentation skills, accuracy, movement, disengagement, and single & multi-threat engagement skills, depending on the host and students' goals. It also includes judgmental shooting exercises. (These blocks are chosen and then combined in an 8-to-16-hour format)
- High-Risk Stops (Pedestrian & Vehicle) - A sheriff's office in the south-east asked for the development of this class. It works through high-risk pedestrian and vehicle stop tactics. Day 1 covers human factors, legal considerations, historical events, safety, and best practices. We will look at ammunition [performance against barriers, then officer-down rescues, before concluding with low light considerations. Day #2 addresses positioning, commands, handling compliant and non-compliant suspects and approaching and clearing the vehicles. The course concludes with opposed scenarios involving a variety of suspect behaviors. The goal is to train your instructors to evaluate various tactics, techniques, and procedures before teaching them to the agency. (Course Time: 16 hours)
- Custom Courses - We can discuss the development and presentation of other classes. For example, I would really enjoy developing FTO-centric curriculum. The subject matter for any other class would have to be within my areas of expertise. For example, I have trained on night vision and IR designators as well as using them in the U.S. Army during ground combat; however, I will be the last person to teach an NVG/IR class as I am not a subject matter expert in this area.
- I'm actively looking for Hosts. Please contact me, we can talk about how to get my classes onto your range and what I can do for you.
- Classes are $250 per day currently. If there is a range fee, that is extra. Outside of the SF Bay Area, class minimums are eight (8) students.
- Cancellation Policy - Looking around the training community, there have been a number of incidents involving late cancellations as well as "I'll pay you when I get there" followed by a No-Show or "I forgot." As a result, cancellations or requests for refunds more than 72 hours out will have the option of a refund, minus a $50 fee or credit to the next comparably priced class within the following year. If you cancel the class you used the credit for, there will not a refund or credit. Cancellations of less than 72 hours will only receive the previously mentioned credit, no-shows or cancellations on the day of the class Will Not receive a credit or refund.
